IQNA – The International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS) called on Muslims to pay Zakat and Sadaqa (charity) in the holy month of Ramadan to support the people of Gaza.

Death and destruction in Gaza are a normal scene as a result of Israel's genocidal war

The call was made in the closing statement of a meeting of the union held in Istanbul.

It said financial help is need to provide food and medicine to women, children and other civilians in the Gaza Strip who have been facing a devastating Israeli war for months.

The union also called on Muslims to pray on the nights of Ramadan for the people of Gaza and the victory of the Palestinian resistance forces against the Zionist regime.

It reiterated its condemnation of the regime’s genocidal war and massacre of defenseless civilians in Gaza and urged the Muslim Ummah and the world’s noble people to make all-out efforts to put an end to the Israeli aggression.

The IUMS also demanded the reopening of all border crossings to allow sending food and medicine to civilians in Gaza.

Israel launched a deadly war on Gaza on October 7, 2023. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, at least 31,045 people have been killed and 72,654 wounded in Israeli attacks. About 72 percent of the victims are children and women.

About 85% of Gazans have been displaced by the Israeli onslaught amid acute shortages of food, clean water and medicine, while 60% of the enclave's infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed, according to the UN.

Israel is accused of genocide at the International Court of Justice, which in an interim ruling in January ordered Tel Aviv to stop genocidal acts and take measures to guarantee that humanitarian assistance is provided to civilians in Gaza.

Ramadan, which began today in some Muslim countries, is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar.

It is a period of prayer, fasting, charity giving and self–accountability for Muslims around the world.
